Emtricitabine-Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate
Emtricitabine / Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate is a combination of two active components used in medicines to treat control of HIV infections. The active ingredient is a synthetic fluoro derivative of thiacytidine with potent antiviral activity. It is phosphorylated to form emtricitabine that inhibits the activity of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) reverse transcriptase. It is a Human Immunodeficiency Virus Nucleoside Analog Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor. Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate is a fumaric acid salt form of tenofovir, a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor analog of adenosine. It is an HIV-1 reverse transcriptase inhibitor and an antiviral drug That contains a tenofovir disoproxil.
Class of Drugs – Nucleoside Analog Reverse Transcriptase Inhibitor
Molecular Formula – C8H10FN3O3S + C23H34N5O14P
Molecular Weight - 247.25 g/mol + 635.5 g/mol
Working: This given combination of medicines i.e. Emtricitabine / Tenofovir Disoproxil Fumarate works in the same way to control HIV infection and chronic hepatitis B virus infections. It works by blocking the effectiveness of reverse transcriptase, an enzyme required for each virus to produce copies of itself. Due to blocking reverse transcriptase reduces the amount of the virus in the blood. Tenofovir also increases CD4 cell count.
Uses: The mentioned medication is approved for the treatment of HIV-1 Infection. It is indicated in combination with other antiretroviral agents for the treatment of human immunodeficiency virus type infection in adults and pediatrics 2 years of age and older weighing at least 10 kg.
